Events and programs that I have attended or helped produce

March 19th 2009, The Banff Centre, Canada

A one-day gallery show at the Banff Centre between myself and Lana Palmer, Works in Progress previews two projects that we have been working on: The Wireless Landscape and Worldmart

The show featured a large map which located all the wireless access points in the town in Banff, as well as a listing of all the names of those access points. Also presented was our mock till where customers could scan grocery store items and see information about their production.

Liminal Screen is an annual artist residency at the Banff Centre with a focus on video works.

I was the technical line producer for this residency. In this position I worked with artists to realize their concept goals by providing technical assistance where necessary.

Because of the video context, most of my time was spent coaching artists in the use of the Max/MSP/Jitter programming environment. Some time was also spent building custom Max Patches for specific use.

The "Almost Perfect" residency is a month-long annual residency at the Banff Centre. The focus of the residency is locative media and a discussion of location based technology.

As an attendee of the residency, I used the time to do some personal research regarding the ways in which we perceive scale and distance in the everyday world.

September 13, 2008, San Carlos, California

I attended Transit Camp Bay Area 2 in September 2008. This one day event was a meeting to discuss the intersection of public transit with information technologies.

This is where I first learned about Avego Shared Transport, a ride-sharing idea that I really like.

March 2008, Bankgok, Thailand

While in Thailand I attended an event hosted by the Department of Export Promotion, BIG Design Week. This evevnt brought speakers from around the world to talk about trends in product design. The audience was primarily factory owners from Thailand.

The talk given by Stephen Burks was my favorite. He discussed how fake replicas produced in China are the embodiment of a crisis in the design world: what does it mean when a fake sells for as much as the "real"?

WhereCamp, now in its third year, is a barcamp style conference for topics of geographically aware computing.

As an attendee at the first WhereCamp in 2007 I enjoyed conversations about many location-based services which have now come to fruition, such as Skyhook Wireless with its wireless positioning service (now used in the iPhone).

October 2005, San Francisco, California

"Scape the Hood" is a location based media experience, or mediascape, that was presented by KQED in the mission district of San Francisco.

This was my first introduction to location-based media. As a volunteer for this event, I helped facilitate the distribution and servicing of the mobile devices that were used by the public to experience the mediascape.
