Oompy WiFi Scanner

Oompy is a battery powered system-on-a-chip which geolocates WiFi networks. Oompy can be told about "known" networks where the internet can reached. When Oompy is near one of these networks, it will use rsync to send it's findings to a remote server. Oompy was built to help me with The Wireless Landscape

How it works

It is built on top of the Atheros AR2315 device. Oompy has a LS20031 GPS unit attached to the serial port of the AR2315 device. Oompy runs Kismet, which listens for wireless networks and associates GPS data by using gpsd. Oompy produces the best results at walking or biking speed.

How to build your own

You can build an Oompy with any device that can run OpenWRT and has a serial port for attaching a GPS device to. For specific details on how to build my Oompy, please email me. Eventually this information will be on the wiki.

About the name

Several companies sell a branded version of the AR2315, known as the OM1P. I acquired one of these units, and ended up calling it Oompy.
